This canvas depicts the Las Vegas Mormon Fort settlement in 1857 after it's completion. Construction of the fort was commanded by John Steel, who Brigham Young sent to create a Mormon outpost, to try an settle the Las Vegas valley. The majority of the fort's construction was aided by the help of the local Paiute Native Americans. After only 2 years of the founding of the site and construction of the Mormon Fort, it was abandoned, due to poor crop production, hardships and infighting withing the Mormon Fort settlers. The State of Nevada purchased this canvas and it is now on permanent display in the museums art collection at the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Park Visitor Center, Las Vegas Nevada.
