This canvas depicts the first July 4 celebration at the site of the new Mormon Fort settlement in 1855. Construction of the fort was commanded by John Steel, who Brigham Young sent to create a Mormon outpost in the remote desert region, to try and settle the Las Vegas valley. The majority of the fort's construction was aided by the help of the local Paiute Native Americans.

I art directed and painted a canvas depicting the founding of the Las Vegas Mormon Fort site in June 1855 for the Las Vegas 100 years Murals commission in 2005. The State of Nevada commissioned me to produce this painting and purchased the canvas, which is now on permanent display at the Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Park Visitor Center, Las Vegas Nevada.

This painting image is available in a half size open edition, acid-free paper print (hand signed in pencil by the artist)
