This canvas painted depicts the Mexican scout Rafael Rivera, he was the first documented non-Native American and a scout for the Armijo Expedition...to venture into and discover the Las Vegas valley in December 1829. This canvas was purchased by the late Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada in 2007 and exhibited in his office in the U.S. Capitol from 2003 - 2017. Upon his retirement in 2017, this painting was given to Nevada Senator Jackie Rosen, who filled Senator Reid's Senate seat and is currently on exhibit in her office in the Senate Hart Building, Washington D.C.
